'Iron Man 3' hits $1 billion milestone; plus more Hollywood headlines

If there were any doubt, let it now be put to rest: "Iron Man" is pure gold. "Iron Man 3," director Shane Black's latest installment in the superhero franchise, has surpassed the $1 billion mark in international grosses.
That makes it the second highest-grossing superhero movie of all time, behind the $1.5 billion made by last year's "The Avengers." It also makes Black's film the 16th movie in history to mark the milestone (sandwiching it right between the $1.04 billion earned by 2008's "The Dark Knight" and the $974.8 million earned by 2001's "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone").
It's interesting to note that more than two-thirds of that haul -- about $700 million -- came from overseas markets. "To an extent, it's a sign of the times," Disney head of distribution Dave Hollis told The WrapThursday (May 16), referring to the growth of the international market. "But we had a great movie that was embraced all around the world as the summer's first blockbuster. We had that incredible May Day, the word of mouth was terrific and we're still seeing the effects of that."
The "Iron Man" milestone tops today's Evening Edition, a regular rundown of recent Hollywood headlines:
Deadline: "Star Trek Into Darkness" gets off to $14 million domestic start. Some analysts say it's not unreasonable to expect a $100 million four-day weekend for director J.J. Abrams' sci-fi sequel.
AP (via Nola.com): Cannes heist sees a reported $1 million in jewelry stolen. An inside job is suspected in the hotel theft, which reportedly targeted the in-room safe of an American transporting the Chopard jewels to be loaned to stars walking the red carpet.
Nola.com: Christopher Nolan reportedly in "informal talks" to direct the next Bond franchise. It's still way, way early in the process, but the possibility of the "Inception" and "Memento" director signing up for the storied spy franchise is intriguing, to say the least.
Deadline: Gerard Butler deep in talks to star in "The Raven." "Hunger Games" star Liam Hemsworth had been tapped to star, but now it looks as if Butler is the hands-on favorite to star in the film, based on a 2010 sci-fi conspiracy thriller.
Moviefone: Oscar-winning "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" to get a sequel. "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon II -- The Green Destiny," will follow the story of "Iron Knight, Silver Vase," the fifth book in author Wang Du Lu's Crane-Iron Pentalogy, the Weinstein Co. has announced.
Variety: Emily Blunt in talks to join Disney's "Into the Woods." She would join Johnny Depp and Meryl Streep in the big-screen adaptation of Stephen Sondheim's 1987 fairy-tale musical. Chris Pine and Jake Gyllenhaal are also reportedly in talks for the project, to be directed by Rob Marshall.
